Professor Ulrich Gabler

Professor Ulrich Gabler
1.10.1913 - 24.2.1994

The desire to be able to cooperate closely with the design engineers of the former Ingenieurkontor Lübeck (IKL) in the realisation of technical concepts led to the decision to establish a workshop for the production of prototypes for submarine components.

Ulrich Gabler, then owner of IKL, therefore founded the limited company Gabler Maschinenbau GmbH in 1962. Already then the principal objective of the company was to collaborate closely with IKL in the development and construction of high quality prototypes, components, test products and special purpose machines.

The company grew fast. In addition to manufacturing submarine components, Gabler Maschinenbau succeeded in opening up new markets by producing machines for the packaging industry – to be more precise: Thermoform machines. This also made it necessary to enlarge the premises and expand.

Innovation and ultra-modern production techniques point to the future

Under the guidance of the third-generation shareholders and managing partners Sören Kayser and Wolfgang Scharf together with Peter Grolla, who is managing the thermoforming technology division, the company emerged as an enterprise with highly innovative capabilities.

Since January 1st 2009 graduate in financial business management Mr. Thorsten Köll has been strengthening the expanding Concern of Gabler group as third managing director.

The primary aim of the company, in addition to retaining independence and safeguarding jobs and training capacities, is to maintain our position of leader in the world market for our products in the fields of naval and thermoform technology. More than 200 employees, of whom over 70 are engineers and technicians, are as dedicated to this aim as the company directors.

Our company

Just outside the gates of Lübeck, with good access to the A 20 and A1 trunk routes and in close proximity of the freight harbours Lübeck-Travemünde and Hamburg, the company‘s own premises provide the two Gabler enterprises with the optimal infrastructure for manufacture and transport of our products.

Several welding workshops, modern CNC and DNC controlled processing areas, lathes, rills, cutting and milling machinery, two modern technology centres for new materials and control technology/miniaturisation facilities as well as test and trial installations enable the highest demands in production precision to be met and ensure that a rapid response is provided to design and development concepts. An ERP system optimised for medium-sized enterprises allows flexibility to be maintained while providing the necessary standardisation. An unusually wide range of development capacities gives us the innovative impulse to cater for the high technical demands made by our discerning customers.

Gabler actively participates in technical advances. Close cooperation between the Gabler development forum, Gabler design departments and consultants in technical colleges and universities ensures that the latest trends and developments are not only recognised and acted upon in good time, but that an active role is played in their early stages.

The demands made on modern hoistable masts, such as radar and communications masts, periscope hoisting devices and optronic masts have risen considerably.
In close dialogue with our specialists, the experience gained in many years of developmental work is put to good use. We consider ourselves world-wide experts in exceptional technologies for hoistable masts, as we have delivered masts for more than 100 submarines to over 17 nations.

We also develop and manufacture a large number of complex components for submarines, such as rudder and plane drive systems, special purpose torque motors, antenna radomes, shore and charging connections. Thorough testing of virtually every feature of these systems can be carried out on site on our own specially designed comprehensive test equipment.
Through our partners FSA we have recently also begun to offer antennas of widely differing types for both military and civilian purposes.

Team work in development, design and manufacture and close cooperation with the shipyards guarantee balanced, perfected equipment and components.

Gabler Thermoform Product fields

Since January 2004 the 100% Gabler subsidiary Gabler Thermoform GmbH & Co. KG is responsible for continuing our thermoform product range.
The company develops, designs and builds thermoform machines, handling systems and thermoform accessories. The products are marketed all over the world through our own marketing system and with commercial partners.

Today, Gabler Thermoform is one of the leading manufacturers of fast-running high performance automatic production systems for packaging materials, which can also be used to make technical articles from plastic sheets. Cooperation with leading toolmakers and with our partner company Lyle in the USA encourages the development of ultra-modern technology. Our tilting technology is unsurpassed world-wide and our handling systems are also preferred for the thermoform machines built by our competitors.

The use of EDP in control and monitoring systems for machine and process handling with state-of-the-art freely programmable control features provides for easy operation of the thermoform machines by the customer and enables rapid adjustment to new articles.

The Gabler range of products is completed by separate cutting presses, sheet heating systems, temperature equalisation equipment and packing machines for the finished products.
The customer‘s specific requirements are taken into consideration by the use of modern technology.

Our potential

Globalisation moves forward all the time, and markets are growing closer and closer together. We are open to this process.
However, we consider ourselves a national, independent enterprise and are sure to protect our own interests for the benefit of our employees.

Our company development concept takes all production factors into consideration and consistutes a consolidated process. Capital and land are safeguarded by a high percentage of own capital and suitable investments. Our workforce as our most important production factor is kept up-to-date with developments and techniques through a comprehensive training and further education system. Sponsorships to high schools and comprehensive schools encourage mutual understanding of economic relationships and help to furnish us with the coming generations of specialists.
The Gabler Campus provides systematic support for practical courses and experience, seminars and dissertations, including accommodation on the company premises, with the aim of encouraging the next generation while also expanding our own horizons.
A Innovation Forum in which creative employees and consultants can develop new ideas gives the final touch to a forward-looking company.

Lübeck: Our town

We are proud of our town Lübeck, a juwel of the Baltic, given the status of a site of international cultural value by UNESCO, queen of the Hanseatic League.

For the benefit of our town and the region around Lübeck, we educate far more trainees than we require for our own needs. We take an active part in associations and the commercial world, sponsor social facilities and actively support creative projects.

In our dealings with our customers, we see ourselves as embassadors of our town, and we always make sure to personally show them around and to explain the special beauty spots and the interesting 850-year history and traditions of Lübeck.
